October 29, 2009

This month’s edition of Scientific American lays out a plan for a Sustainable Future.  How to get all energy from  wind, water and solar power by 2030.

Inside, guys with all the smarts and credentials say that it can be done, should be done, and how it will be done.  It was the first positive hit by “mainstream” media and folks in the US that what we greens have been talking about all along is doable with today’s technology, not tomorrow’s.  Great articles.

Rebecca joins thousands in Climate Action rally

October 24, 2009

Putting the planet before politics, Rebecca joins thousands on Saturday October 24, 2009 for Climate Action rally.

Rebecca Helps, the Green Party candidate in the by-election has been canvassing almost non-stop since the by-election has been called.  However, her dedication to the campaign didn’t stop her from taking off a few precious hours on Saturday to take part in a climate action rally being dubbed “bridge to a cooler planet”.

“We must put the planet before politics,” said Helps. “I’ll be jumping on the Skytrain to show my support for real action on climate change.”

Helps, along with thousands of other BC residents will join together for a parade across the Cambie bridge, which is being partially closed for the rally.  Similar rallies are happening around the globe on Saturday to mark the International Day of Action leading up to the Copenhagen Climate.

The rallies are pushing the government to reduce global carbon dioxide levels down to 350 ppm, the level leading scientist feel is safe, from their current 390 ppm.  The current levels, according to recent reports are having devastating affects on the planets ice caps.

Rebecca Helps believes that a by-election is the perfect opportunity for voters to send a strong message that they want real action on climate, and that win or lose, a strong green vote will put pressure on the government.

“Every time the Green Party does well, the other parties suddenly announce new climate initiatives. Win or lose, I know a Green vote can make a difference.”

Elizabeth May, our amazing Green Party leader, went to Ottawa to join another similar demonstration called “Fill the Hill”.

It’s Not About How Green You Are but How Green You Are Becoming

October 14, 2009

I often get asked if I do such and such very green thing.  Some of them I do many I don’t, yet.  In fact there are many ways I could be greener and each day I find new ways to be greener.  Compare how green you are with how green you were.  If you are satisfied with the improvements just keep taking one step at a time.  Each step you’ll find yourself enjoying the unexpected benefits of the change you’ve made and you might see some additional options you might pursue.  Becoming greener is about becoming more secure from a very uncertain world.

Join Rebecca for her birthday!

October 12, 2009

That’s right!  Rebecca is celebrating her birthday this Wednesday.

So, NOW would be a REALLY good time to make a donation of money and/or time to the Rebecca Helps campaign.  Rebecca’s birthday is on Wednesday, October 14th and we are having a party party.  That’s a birthday party within a Green Party launch party.

The party is from 7pm – 8:30pm at the Poirier Library, the corner of Winslow and Poirier in central Coquitlam.   We also really need help with the campaign.  Tell us what you could do.  Take a sign? Canvass your neighbourhood with Rebecca?  Invite Rebecca to a meeting or event? Do phone calling?

It’s all very informal.  Please come out to MEET Rebecca and her team – and if you can, bring a cheque or cash (credit card too).  Make cheques payable to:  New Westminster-Coquitlam Green Party EDA.
